Cooling problems
- AC Not CoolingWhen an air conditioner runs but the rooms stay warm, the cause is most often a clogged air filter, a thermostat setting that drifted, a grimy condenser coil, a refrigerant leak, or a weakening capacitor or fan motor.
- AC Blowing Warm AirWarm air from the vents most often comes from the thermostat being on Fan or Heat, a tripped breaker or outdoor disconnect, an outdoor unit that has stopped, or refrigerant that has leaked out.
- AC Freezing UpIce forms on an air conditioner when its indoor coil drops below freezing.
- AC Leaking WaterWater leaking from an AC usually means the condensate drain line is clogged, the drain pan is cracked or overflowing, a condensate pump has stopped, or the coil froze and is now melting.
- AC Making NoiseAC noises usually point to a specific area.
- AC Not Turning OnAn AC that won't turn on usually has a power or control problem: dead thermostat batteries, a wrong setting, a tripped breaker, a switched-off furnace or air handler, or a safety float switch tripped by a clogged drain.
Heating problems
- Furnace Not HeatingWhen a furnace won't heat, the usual suspects are a thermostat set wrong or out of batteries, a clogged air filter, a tripped breaker or furnace switch, an ignition or flame sensor fault, or a safety switch that has shut the burners down.
- Furnace Blowing Cold AirA furnace blowing cold air is often set to fan on instead of auto, running the blower between heat cycles.
- Heat Pump Not HeatingWhen a heat pump appears to stop heating, it may just be defrosting, or running on a mild setting that feels cooler than furnace heat.
